Ball Bearings Are Flat - Another Myth Crushed

What shape are ball bearings? They are shaped like a ball, as everyone knows, right?

The funny thing about what everyone knows is that everyone can be wrong. For instance, everybody thinks that the America’s Cup is an ocean-sailing race, and yet the Swiss managed to win the Cup. For those readers who are geographically-challenged, Switzerland is a land-locked country comprised entirely of mountains.

What does this have to do with ball bearings. Very little, I suspect, but balls have very little to do with ball bearings, either. Ball bearings look more like hula hoops. But don’t try using them for that - you will find them inconveniently heavy and painfully small.

You can view a picture of a ball bearing in the middle of this ball bearing supplier’s page.

So what are those stunted metal tube donuts called ball bearings for anyway? Are they used as a spare wheel? Do they hold in evil shop-floor spirits? No, they help things move more efficiently. In an early demonstration of bearing usage, three ladies pulled a locomotive (It was just a demonstration, not a career development).

Many bearings look very similar, whether they are ball bearings, roller bearings or other bearings. What?! Other bearings?

What is a ball bearing, anyway?

Ball bearings are formed with an outer ring, an inner ring, a cage or a retainer inside, and a rolling element inside, typically a ball (which is why they are called ball bearings). Roller bearings are formed using a roller instead of a ball, which is why they are called roller bearings (Yes, finally something that makes sense!). Other bearings look just like metal tubes, called plain bearings or bush bearings. They look like sawed off pipe or tube (something my metal tube bending client would be turning into architecturally glamorous structural supports).

The principle of bearings is the same principle behind the wheel: things move better by rolling than by sliding. They are called “bearings” because they bear the weight of the object, such as an inline skate or the head of dentist’s drill, allowing the object to glide over them with incredible ease and speed. Unlike wheels, they don’t turn on an axel; they turn on themselves.

You can see this in action with some great cut-away pictures of bearings.

The balls or rollers spin on themselves inside the bearing, reducing friction for the machine parts attached to them. It’s much neater than using a bucket of oil, especially in dental equipment, and significantly more reliable than hamsters on a wheel.

Once upon a time, all bearings were metal - like a metal tube or pipe with metal balls stuck inside. These days, more and more are made of ceramic or even plastic (like everything else in this world!).

If you are still confused about why ball bearings are not shaped like balls, just remember that you drive on a parkway and park on a driveway. And you can even try sailing your sea-craft through the Swiss Alps. But don’t try playing a game of one-on one basketbearing.

Losing Angry Customers

This article offers five ways to help you deal with angry customers. While the goal of all businesses is to have only happy customers, we also have to be realistic and realize sometimes we are going to anger a customer. Isn’t it best to know in advance how to deal with an angry one, of course it is. Read on…..

Handle the person first, then the problem. Let angry people vent their frustrations. This alone will go a long way toward resolving the problem. Many times people just need to let off some steam and you are their sounding board, whether you deserve to be or not.

Apologize. This is crucial. It shows you are committed to the relationship. Remember, the customer is always right, whether they are or not. So apologize, whether or not it was your fault.

Show empathy. Assure your customer that he or she has every right to be angry and disappointed and that you would feel the same way if it happened to you. Make them feel understood. Use your own experiences to show empathy.

Find a solution. Resolve the problem with your customer, not for the customer. Ask questions that will get the customer involved in the process, such as “How would you like to see this problem resolved?” or If you were in my position, how might you resolve this kind of problem for your customer?”

Follow up. After resolving the problem, you must follow up. Make sure things are satisfactory, but also look for additional needs that represent selling opportunities.

So, employ the above strategies and turn angry customers into happy ones!

Trends in Gift Giving - Jewelry a Timeless Favorite

In times of rapid change, constants lend comfort to our lives. Since ancient times, jewelry has been one of the most popular gifts to give and to receive, and it still ranks among the top gifts as a universal, particularly pearls and birthstones. Jewelry ranks just beneath flowers as the gift that says “I love you,” and it ranks just above flowers as a gift to convey that the recipient is someone special. A gift of jewelry delights the recipient and evokes a genuine smile.

It’s the Style…

It’s not the price; it’s the style that determines whether your gift of jewelry is received in the same spirit in which it is given. To give jewelry that delights, match the gift to the recipient’s style. Jewelry is one area where you cannot give a gift that you would love to own. Your idea of a fashionable bauble may be another’s idea of junk. Is the intended’s style casual or more formal, traditional or contemporary? You wouldn’t give a Swatch watch to your great-grandmother any more than you would give a diamond tennis bracelet to your Goth niece. Select a compatible style and your gift will stand out among the recipient’s favorites and ensure that the gift never finds its way to the regifting closet.

The Many Faces of Pearls

Any woman over the age of 30 appreciates a fine strand of pearls. They’re elegant, timeless, and suitable for most occasions. Think back to your favorite old movies; most leading ladies wore pearls at some point during the movie.

Pearls are the only gemstone created within another living organism. Natural pearls are grown without any human intervention when a speck of sand or other irritant lodges itself inside an oyster. Deteriorating environmental conditions have rendered natural pearls all but obsolete.

Cultured pearls have quickly filled the void. The only difference between a natural pearl and a cultured pearl is that human intervention is required to place the irritant inside the oyster shell. By controlling the size and shape of the irritant as well as the environmental factors, cultured pearls guarantee greater quality control. You’ll find pearls in many hues ranging from white South Sea pearls to black Tahitian pearls, and covering a lot of territory in between: pink, green, blue and ivory.

Freshwater pearls sport a combination of interesting shapes and hues not usually found in saltwater varieties. Freshwater pearls come from Chinese rivers and lakes where the Hyriopsis cumingi mussels can produce 50 pearls at once. They are usually less expensive than saltwater pearls, but no less elegant than their saltwater counterpart.

Birthstones

Precious and semi-precious gems linked to birthdays date as far back as the 15th century. Unlike today, early birthstones were linked to the signs of the Zodiac instead of to calendar months. Almost everyone appreciates a birthstone, and it shows that you actually put some thought into the gift. Many people believe that wearing their birthstone protects them and brings them good luck. When giving a birthstone as a gift, think beyond rings to bracelets, pendants, earrings, pins and chokers.

The chart below contains the official modern birthstones, as established in 1912 by the National Association of Jewelers. Some birthstones have many legends associated with them; you’ll find a brief summary below. This official list applies only to the United States. Several other birthstone lists exist, such as the mystical birthstones, which originated in Tibet and the Ayurvedic birthstones, which originated in India.

Enclose a card with the gift explaining the meaning of the birthstone. While most people know their birthstone, few know the significance attached to it.

If you want to give jewelry as a gift, but you’re at a loss for what to give, pearls and birthstones provide two safe options that are sure to please and make a lasting impression.

The Forgotten Advertising Tip

I’m sure while you have seen many tips on advertising, many that talk about testing and tracking your ads, I’m sure that this one important tip is rarely mentioned: Running more than one ad at a time isn’t the greatest idea.

While it seems like a good idea to spend your monthly advertising budget all at once at the first of the month, is it really gaining you the best exposure? Even if you are running ads on various websites and networks, there is a pretty good chance many of those that see your ad on one site are going to see them on another.

Rather than having several ads running at the same time, try to space out your ads a bit and run only one at a time. Why? Well think of it this way. Say a visitor seeing your ad on one site and thinking “interesting, I may have to buy something later”. Later that same day if they are on another website I’m sure they’ll think, “there it is again, but I’ll buy later”.

Now think if you would have waited a week or two before advertising at that second site in which this visitor comes to daily, and then seeing it saying, “oh wow that site! I forgot I was going to buy there last week, so I’d better do it now”.

See the difference? Rather than one person seeing your site several times in one day or week and it still being the bad time, if you space your ads out you have a better chance of catching them when it IS a better time…or at least taking a closer look at your site and getting them subscribed to your newsletter or other free offers you have on your website.

Another reason it’s good to spread your advertising dollars as far as they will go is for constant exposure. If you are seen constantly in several places at all times, the easier you are going to be remembered. Not to mention like we said before, always be seen by someone who IS ready to buy.

Now of course, when you do choose to advertise on several sites at the same time, there is the chance you will reach more of your target audience. Plus if you have the funds to constantly advertise on several sites at once, go for it! Just remember to keep the ads going, so you have a constant flow of visitors.

5 Ways to Protect Information - Clear Recommendations and Direct Links

It’s not the big secret that modern operating systems are not as reliable as they supposed to be. At the same time the most of info is stored on the hard drives nowadays. And every minute all the data can be vanished from your drives because of the system crash or virus attack. Here I’ll tell you how to keep your info primitive.

1. Use all the types of removable mediums. There are some types: flash drive, diskette, cd-rw. First two are very convenient for small volumes of info, and cd-rw is able to store big files and even programs.
Pluses: You may copy all your info to removable mediums. Go to the nearest electronic store or visit www.amazon.com
Minuses: You have to waste your time in case of cd-rw, because this process is long enough.
All that storages are subjected to wear, so you may lose your data nevertheless.

2. Use firewalls and anti-virus programs. Often reasons for system crashes are viruses and hackers attacks, so you must be protected to cut-off all the intruders. Check www.download.com for spyware programs.
Pluses: Protection of the computer.
Minuses: Viruses appear on the net faster, than antidotes for them.

3. Update your system on the regular basis. Service packs for Windows are available at official Microsoft site and free for download. Visit www.microsoft.com
Pluses: Additional secure for system.
Minuses: Sometimes after installation, all the system goes wrong.

4. Use file-hosting services. These services allow users to upload and host their data at company servers. These servers are overprotected and, moreover always have the copy of users’ data. For file-hosting service visit www.oxyshare.com
Pluses: Your data is in the secure place and always within the reach.
Minuses: It takes time to upload the data.

5. Use backup programs. Such programs allow you to backup all your system tunings. So even after crash you may restore your system data. Please visit www.tucows.com to download it.
Pluses: The system will be automatically tuned after crash
Minuses: Not correct program may harm the system

Remember, that downloading of dubious software and low privacy settings of browser may cause the illegal intrusion into your system.

The Reality Factor

Looking around at different martial arts and the practitioners
there is one thing that surprises me very time. Many, may people
don’t have an R-factor in their training and techniques

You see people who get almost punched in their face and they
just stay standing up with a big smile on their face. Others get
almost kicked in the groin and keep moving on as if nothing
happened and their “parts” were made of steel. Even worse are
those who tell you to go with the flow…???

all these people a lacking an important part in their training:
the reality OR reality factor (R-factor)

If you get hit in the face you won’t be laughing, your head will
be propelled back or sideways, you will lose balance because
your body follows your head. The kick in the groin will make you
think your stomach wants to come out and the floor will be very
close by. Those who practice”flow jutsu” are rather hilarious.
Who to make a street fighter to go with your flow. Will you tell
him who to catch you, hit you or how to roll? Oh and tell him
also he can’t resist because if he resists your Ki can’t flow.

These are only a few examples but take a look around. You will
be surprised how many people are lacking the r-factor. no matter
what martial art they practice Even high ranked practitioners
often make these mistakes on seminars you can see them teaching
elaborate techniques of 10 different combinations who lack every
sense of reality. They will give you some explanation like this
one: “First you block his attack, you kick him in the groin,
break his right at while you stick your finger in his eye, than
you turn around, kick his right knee, enter on the opposite side
, break his neck and throw him head down. subsequently you go
and sit on top of him, pull his head back by grabbing his hear
and applying a lock to his arm.”

This looks very macho but not realistic. If you block and kick
someone in the groin, than the fight is over. He will go down so
fast you can believe it. If you kick would miss the target than
you can break his arm as a secondary option.

There are really very few people willing to continue a fight
with a broken arm. If this too misses I suggest you review your
techniques and train more because there is something lacking in
your execution of the techniques or the martial art you practice.

A true fight doesn’t take long, all is over and done with in
just a few seconds. Give it 2 OR 3 seconds more between 2
equally experienced fighters who know how to counter and block
but it’s over before you know. The first one to make a mistake
will loose.

The 2 things that have most influence on the R-factor are the
teacher and the martial art. as a practitioner you must clearly
distinguish between martial arts and martial sports. Martial
sports are as the name already suggests a sport. Based on
martial art but with rules, regulations, protection and
competition.

The forefather of these sports, Martial arts has no rules ,
protection or competitions. Therefore the mind set, techniques
and approach is different So ultimately their goals are also
completely different. Whereas the sports oriented martial arts
give their practitioners a chance to demonstrate themselves and
their skills to others , martial artists on the other hand can
only fight with themselves and every real confrontation with
another person results in big damage for one of the two or both.
Martial arts are more realistic oriented than sports because of
their different goals. So let’s focus on them. Those who claim
to be highly effective in true cases.

Be carefully with those martial things who claim to be martial
arts (on the outside they look LIKE martial arts) but who
surround themselves with a vail of mysticism and special powers.
(these special powers may exist but they will be accompanied by
a very special personality) Those martial things are easy to
recognize : no intense physical training, a lot of talk about
Ki, their masters and instructors hardly get involved in
training, and you need many years of practice to develop these
special mental powers. During these “many Years” you will be
brainwashed and teaching this mystical martial art yourself to
other people in order to make the NEXT generation of “flow-kas”

Until you meet reality on the street…

The other risk factor is the teacher. as a basic rule you can
tell his R-factor by his Macho behavior. The more macho he acts,
the less R-factor he holds. His macho behavior will tell you
all. Why is there a need FOR a teacher to act macho? Who does he
have something o prove to? What does he need to prove? If his
techniques are ANY good than they will speak FOR themselves, no
need to prove this to people with no OR little experience. OR
maybe he has to prove his poor students that he is the best?
(Keep in mind that there is always someone better than you are)
This points more to a weak character rather than a martial arts
master

some masters are very professional and perfect teachers but they
feel the urge to test the affectivity of their techniques. This
is very understandable and unfortunately this occurs many times.
How ELSE can you know if your techniques are ANY good? The
problem is not to be found in the fact that they want to test
their skills but in the fact that they use there students to do
this.. The students who are already convinced of the affectivity
of the techniques and impressed by the teachers authority
usually don’t resist the techniques. off course this will make
the techniques work perfect. If they dare to resist than there
are 2 possibility’s: 1) the technique works just fine. 2) the
technique must be forced.

This is the cause of technical quality going done the drain.
when USinG a lot of physical force most techniques can be forced
upon a weaker opponent but onLY by superior technical skill you
will be able to EXECUTE your technique on everyone. A perfect
technique needs a balanced use of skill, speed and force. There
is no need to be a superman to be a great master. The best way
to test your techniques is to do this with someone of your same
skill LEVEL/grade. This apply’s for both students and teachers
alike. Both will learn a lot from this type of training.

How can you bring the R-factor in your training as a student?

one of the problems is the great amount of techniques to be
found in the Genbukan Ninpo Bugei system. We have over 300
techniques from 10th kyu up to 1st dan. How do you cope with
this? First of all you must understand that as a kyu grade you
are learning to write and read so to speak. ( kyu waza) some of
the kyu waza are taken out of their context, other look useless
in true cases. Other look like old fashion and the last group of
techniques seem to be very effective. Which one do you train?
The answer is very easy:

All techniques must be trained…

Useless and old fashion looking techniques will teach you
concepts or moves that will result of the highest importance
later in your training. Out of the effective techniques you can
take 15 or 20 techniques and repeat them thousands of times
Until they become a reflex. This is what I call your F.H.T.C.
box (first help in true cases) Training the basic form though is
not enough. Try to do your techniques in another form. Against a
body grab, wrist grab, attack from different sides, sitting on
the floor or in a chair,. etc…

Soon you will be very skillfully in defending yourself. But a
warning is in place here: This training must only be done under
a master instructor with many years of experience. If I have
enough with 20 techniques , why must i train hundreds and
hundreds of techniques?

Because techniques are not the final goal. They are only a way
to… We use them in the same way we use mathematic formulas to
solve complex questions and get to the core of the technique.
Those 20 techniques won’t save you when confronted with a
specialist. Especially noT if you don’t understand the
underlying principles behind each and every technique. Ma-ai,
metsuke, kuzushi, etc… are only a few of them Every technique
and kata you learn will teach you a lot about the essence of
combat. to discover them you need a good teacher and lots and
lots of training. 3 hours/week is not enough. You need daily
practice to be able to discover the secrets within the
techniques. Every discovery will make the R-factor go up and up.

During all these century’s the way to make war has changed
enormous but the CLOSE combat, man to man fight is still the
same. A punch is a punch and a kick a kick. We didn’t grow 3
arms or legs suddenly. The same principles and concepts
discovered in century’s of wa and man to man combat are still
actual and highly effective. The world changes but man is still
the same man he was 2000 years ago.

7 Little Things That You Can do to Organize the Kids’ Rooms

1. Sink to their level. Get on your knees in their room to view things from a kid’s level. Convenience is an important factor in getting anyone to organize or put things away. Lower clothing racks in the closet. Put most frequently used items on the lowest shelves and in the lowest drawers. Set up decorative, short open bins, crates, baskets and boxes in corners, on closet floors and at the foot of the bed.

2. Hide stuff under the bed. Use flat, rectangular storage bins on wheels that are made for under-the-bed storage. Designate one of these for Barbie dolls and another for mini toy cars. Store your children’s artwork including construction paper and crayons in one of the bins. Older children can store schoolwork and notebooks here. Got music lovers? They can keep a pile of CDs handy here.

3. Make organizing fun. Organizing can be a drag even for “big people.” Imagine how your child feels at the thought of clearing away his toys, clothes and school work. Get your children involved by letting them creatively label their own drawers and bins. They can make personalized drawings as labels. Or you can take photos of your child with an object that goes in the drawer and tape it to the front of the bin or drawer. Is the drawer supposed to hold small toy soldiers? Tape a small clear plastic pocket to the outside of the drawer that’s stuffed with an example of the contents such as one toy soldier. You can buy notebook plastic sleeves (also called sheet protectors) from any office supply store. Then just cut them to the size needed. Use clear shipping tape to attach labels to bins. Put a laundry hamper under a kid size basketball hoop.

4. Keep drawers shallow. The deeper the drawer, the more kids will fill it. With a few exceptions for big bulky items, use shallow drawers. Some narrow storage carts on wheels come with five or six shallow drawers. You can roll the cart into the closet if needed or line several in a row against a wall. Fill deeper drawers with mini-organizers such as small trays, tins, recycled cardboard boxes and more. Don’t use lids on the mini-organizers; that’s just a hassle for kids to find their items and remember to put the lids back on each item. Use makeshift cardboard dividers to separate things in drawers–like socks.

5. Color code it. Buy blue bins for Barbie dolls and red bins for fire trucks. Put summer clothing on green hangers and Sunday dress outfits on blue hangers. Or use different colors for different children. Suzy gets blue bins and hangers and Sandy gets red bins and hangers.

6. Hang it. Your children might view their collection of self-created artwork in much the same way as you view your collection of store-bought artwork. Buy inexpensive frames and hang drawings in a clustered artistic layout on one wall in your child’s room. It adds a decorative and personalized element. Put up a cork/bulletin board for the kids to hang ribbons and medals from field days, school spirit events and competitions. Another cork board can be for photos. Or hang a rectangular vertical homemade fabric organizer with pockets beside the door to hold photos, souvenir card collections and birthday cards through the years.

7. Set ground rules. For example, before you play another board game, you must first put this board game away. Before each gift-giving season, you must pick one item to donate to a nonprofit organization; it brings a smile to the face of a child with less than you. You can only keep things in your room that have a place. So if a drawer is full and you want to keep something new, you must discard something from the drawer (for example, an old piece of artwork for a new piece of artwork or an old broken toy for a new one).

Be a Change Agent ( Part 1)

Aligning business organizations to be successful in the present and keep on doing this in the future means to develop a new style of Leadership.
To celebrate success in our days a leader most is able to craft a strategic vision, define objectives, design, implement and monitor the execution of a strategy and be a change leader in those same organizations.

The success of these change initiatives depends largely on leadership and each leader’s ability to not only face change but to welcome it and facilitate it. In addition, leaders must ensure that those who work for them will not only accept the change but embrace it.

Most change initiatives focus on the operational and processing aspect.

What managers too often ignore is the human side - the humanistic aspect of change. Anyone who has ever attempted to implement a change of any kind has experienced some kind of resistance by people in the organizations.
Therefore it is vital to make the change project, their project as well as yours.

The only way to give people a sense of ownership is to involve them make them believe that this is primarily their project and that the expected outcome will benefit them in may ways.

To achieve this You have to take in consideration some basic rules:

2 way communication: it is important to listen to each others ideas and thoughts

To show respect: Everybody participating in a team must have respect for each other. Treat others the same way You want others to treat You.
Involvement in the change process: make sure that everybody is able to participate with thoughts and ideas in most of the decisions that have to be taken.

Share best practices expertise and allow that everybody learn with each other: provide feedback, by ensuring that people are committed to the aims of the change process, be sure to pass around any favourable feedback. Communicate, send out emails - anything, just make sure that everybody hears the good news.

And last but not least, have fun: Team members should be able to have fun together. It can be amazing how productive a good laughter can be. It improves motivation, increases moral, team spirit, and performance.

Are You A Pc Gamer And Want The Best Out Of Your Graphics Ca

Introduction

In this article you will learn how to get the most out of your graphics card by installing new drivers and tweaking Windows. The guide is based around Windows XP Professional Edition but you can use the same guide to tweak other Windows operating systems.

Step 1.

The first thing you need to know what graphics card you are using. The most popular graphics card companies are nVidia and ATi. Both these companies have an excellent range of products and offer excellent service. Once you know what graphics card you are using, then head over to the companies website where you can download the latest drivers.

Drivers are software that runs your graphics card, printer or scanner correctly. Being up to date with drivers will help solve issues that may arise with modern PC games. Just recently I had to update my drivers to fix a problem I had with a game I recently purchased, and this solved my problem.

OK once you have downloaded your drivers for your graphics card make sure you create a restore point using the utility System Restore. This can be done my click Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools and then System Restore. Then follow the on screen instructions to create the restore point. By doing this it makes sure that if a problem occurs after you installed the new drivers, you can return to the restore point to see if the problem is the drivers you installed.

Once you’ve finished creating your restore point, you need to install your drivers. This can done by double clicking on the file you downloaded and then you follow the on screen instructions. After you’ve installed your drivers you will have to restart Windows so the changes can take effect.

If everything goes according to plan you should see an increase in performance in your games and you will not need to go back to your restore point. If you do have problems, use your restore point to go back and fix the problems. If the problem persists, then contact the company that made your graphics card.

Step 2.

Make sure you have the latest version of DirectX. This can be done by going onto the Microsoft website http://www.microsoft.com and searching DirectX. Once you’ve downloaded the latest version, you will need to create another restore point. One person I know installed the latest version of DirectX and then had problems afterwards, and because they didn’t create a restore point they couldn’t fix the problem and so they needed to reformat their computer to solve the problem. Again to create a restore point, go to Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools and then System Restore.

Once you’ve created the restore point install the latest version of DirectX by double clicking on the file you just downloaded. Follow the on screen instructions and once you’ve finished you will have to restart your Windows.

Step 3.

In this step I will guide you through tweaking Windows XP. The first step will be changing the performance of Windows, to do this right-click on My Computer and then Properties->Advanced->Performance->Settings and select ‘Adjust for best Performance’.

The next step is to change your Themes, so right-click on your desktop and select Properties. Under the Themes tab set your theme to Windows Classic.

I hope that’s helped you. If you have any problems or comments please contact me at steve.hames@gaming-archive.com
