Take Care of Her and She’ll Do the Same ( How to start out the riding season)

Has your scoot been sitting in the garage all winter, just dying to be ridden? Or have you had the chance to only get her out a couple of times? If you answer yes to either of these questions, then this article will intrest you. This article lets you know what I do every year right before riding season starts.

Living in the lower midwest, there seems to be several chances to ride during the winter. Usually, a day here, and a day there. But for the most part the bike still sits on a pretty regular basis. Sitting, in and of itself doesn’t do any harm to your bike but some of the less durable stuff has a tendancy to break down even when sitting. Another thing, in order to help you have a safer and problem free season it’s just better to run the checks listed below.

  • Fuel - Gas tends to break down as it ages. If you’ve ever smelt a gas can that been sitting for awhile you know what I mean. If my bikes been sitting for a over a month, I will drain the gas and put new fuel in it.
  • Oil and Primary Drive Fluid - Now I don’t know if oil breaks down by just sitting, but every March 1st I do an oil change regardless of the milage since the last one. One of the things that was suggested to me was that by doing an oil change after the bike has sat for awhile helps get more of the stuff that gathers in oil out.
  • Battery - Winters can be rough on batteries. I know some people who take theirs out during the winter and store it in a warmer place. I also know people who keep it on a battery charger all winter. I don’t know what works best, but I do know that a battery that has sat for awhile might not have all of the kick it really needs. Before you go out for the first time, give the battery a good check. Look for leaks or anything that looks unusal. If you’ve got a battery charger, give it a good charge before you go out. It might just help keep you on the road.
  • Air Cleaner - During the winter the critters that live in your garage all scamper to find someplace to hide your air cleaner could be one of them. I pull out my air cleaner and clean it and oil it every year at the time that I do my winter oil change. By doing that I’m sure that my first ride will be a nicer day.
  • Spark Plugs - To me it just seems to easy to not pull the plugs and give them a quick once over. Plugs in general can tell you a lot about how your motor is running. Why not check them and replace them now, instead of on the side of the road.
  • Belts and Chains - Wheather you have belt drive, chain drive or shaft drive. Make sure all the parts appear in good order and everything that is supposed to be tight is tight.
  • Tires and Wheels - Make sure your tires look ok. That they don’t have any cracks or worn spots and that tire pressure is good. (You should do this regularly). As for your wheels. If you have solid wheels or mags or anything other than spokes checking your wheels is pretty easy. You only have to check for any corrosion, or dings. If you have spokes, CHECK TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE TIGHT. Loose spokes can cause you to get a flat or even worse, have the spokes to break. Check them carfully.
  • Cables- During the winter you can get quite a bit of condensation in your cables. This can cause all kinds of problems. These might include rusting the cable or weakening the cable. Check them and lubricate them if necessary.
  • Lights - Make sure that all of your lights and other electrical components are in working order. Especially, at the beginning of the season, since the cagers aren’t used to seeing us out there.
  • Chassis - Make sure that everything is tightened up. Some of us who ride bikes that have a tendancy to really loosen things up need to really check the bike over during this step.
  • Rider Gear - Now that the bike is already to go make sure you are too. Check your eye protection, condition leathers, and protect your helmet with a new headwrap. Also don’t forget, you might still be wearing gloves so check those zipper pulls also.

All of these are important checks for starting out the season and during the riding season. You don’t have to be a great wrench to be able to do these checks and there are several books available that can help you with these basic maintenance tasks.

Protect Yourself with Spy Bug Detectors

If you are involved in surveillance on other people, chances are that there are other people involved in surveillance on you. In order to detect when others may be listening in on you, it is a good idea to keep one or two different types of spy bug detectors. Because there are plenty of different bugs out there, and because they make use of a variety of different technologies, it is important to have at least two different types of spy bug detectors in order to sweep for multiple types of listening devices.

Because the most popular listening devices are RF (radio frequency) bugs, it is important to make use of RF spy bug detectors. Choose a sensitive model with good bandwidth and circuitry. It is good to have one that can pick up a wide range of frequencies so that you are not missing a bug, and then feel confident that it has been removed. Of course, if you are in an area where there is a great deal of ambient RF energy, there may be too much interference. The good news, though, is that with most detectors of this type it is possible to experiment and then familiarize yourself with the unit so that you can still use it even in high RF areas.

Electronic eavesdropping can also be detected with spy bug detectors that not only find electronic signals in a room or on a person you are speaking with, but also pinpoints them It is possible for you to get a detector with a LED display that shows you exactly where the bug is located. This can help you to either find and disable the bug, or let you know where it is so that you can “plant” misleading information.

Finally, in today’s wireless world it is possible to detect digital blue tooth eavesdropping. There are spy bug detectors that can help you avoid being spied on with wireless devices, and with blue tooth technology. There are even state of the art detectors that switch between detecting digital bugs and analog bugs. With all that is available, you can easily avoid any eavesdropping by utilizing spy bug detectors.

Securing Your Estate

Usually your personal security won’t be much of an issue. Yes, anyone can get mugged, but unless you go around upsetting dangerous people or living in dangerous places you shouldn’t need a bodyguard. The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to keep a low profile. When mixing with wealthy people it’s fine or even desirable to dress up, wear your expensive watch and jewellery & flaunt youself. It’s fun. But there is a time and a place for everything. Don’t rub your wealth in the faces of non wealthy people. Their life is hard enough already without being reminded of what they don’t have but would love to possess. Most people (wealthy or not) would never dream of hurting you or robbing you even if they are jealous. But don’t tempt fate. Jails are full for a reason. Some people are desperate enough to steal with or without violence. I do recommend you take self defence classes, they keep you fit, help your self confidence and could save your life. If you do find yourself in the position however where someone sticks a gun or knife in your face and demands your watch, give it to them, it should be insured anyway. Don’t be a hero, graveyards are full of heroes.

To secure your car, get an alarm and never leave it unattended when it is unlocked. Keep it fully insured and park wherever possible in a well lit parking structure which has video surveillance and a boom gate that needs to be raised using a ticket or manually by some person in a booth when you want to leave.

To secure your home you need to take a good hard look at the estates weaknesses. Start at the perimeter. Fences are designed to keep the faint hearted out, delay intruders, warn the resident of intruders, if alarmed, and it fitted with cameras identify the intruders. The best fences are masonary walls at least 2.5m high with barbed wire or broken glass fastened to the top. Don’t have more gates than necessary and keep them locked. For convenience have automatic gates with a card or pin number access. Remote controlled gates can be hacked too easily. The gate should be made of similar strength material as the wall.

Normally when people steal from you they do it in a way so they are not seen or they use a ruse (like pretending to be a removalist and clear out your house openly in front of the neighbours). If you take the right precautions you can be very well protected. You don’t need to turn your house into Fort Knox. Nobody with half a brain is going to ram through your front gate and storm your house armed with machine guns if you have a decent police force in your country. Too high a profile, limited chance of success.

Keep your yard clean and free from hiding places. Clear shrubs away from windows. Use cameras, have some clearly visible as a deterrent and some hidden so they can’t be found and neutralised (not a likely event). Flower beds around the house are a good idea as they offer no where to hide and are very good at collecting footprints. Thorny plants around fences and around downpipes are a good idea. Cactuses are good for this, so are roses, bouganvilleas, holly and barberry. Guard dogs are excellent if they have been trained not to take food from outside their bowl and they have been trained not to eat your kids. Put up ‘Beware of the Dog’ signs to prevent lawsuits. Small yappy dogs make good alarm systems but they are also annoying as they often yap at anything. You need one that knows the difference between an intruder and a moth.

Lighting is important. Gates and entrance points should be constantly lighted as a deterrence. Motion sensitive lighting should be considered for the rest of your compound.

Gravel driveways and paths are difficult for people to walk on quietly. You might want to consider this.

Doors should be solid, not hollow. Use security screen doors locked at all times. Remember also, a door is only as strong as the frame it is in. Glass in the door if used at all, should be kept away from the locking mechanism. Use deadlocks (so you need a key both sides) and good quality hinges. Garage doors are a weak point in most homes. The door leading from your garage into your home should be treated as an external door and secured as such. Use peep holes and intercoms to screen people before opening the door to them.

Windows are a problem. Using pins are a good idea to lock sliding windows (and doors for that matter). They can also be easily removed in an emergency. If possible windows on the ground floor should have bullet proof glass so they can’t be smashed. Make sure skylights are reinforced and that vents that lead to the roof or walls are all too small for human access.

Invest in a quality alarm system. A monitored alarm system is best. If it goes off a security company comes to see what the problem is. Have signs clearly visible as a deterrant. If you can afford it , pay to have security patrols come by your house at irregular intervals or even have them permanently on site.

Don’t tell people your plans when going on holidays. By this I mean, keep it as quiet as possible. Have your mail and newspapers collected. Put some of your interior lights on timers so it looks like you’re home.

Also secure your home from fire. Protect sleeping areas by installing smoke detectors between sleeping areas and other parts of the house. Check the batteries regularly. Have fire extinguishers in the kitchen, sheds and garages. Kitchen extinguishers must be rated for fat fires. Also have a fire blanket fitted in the kitchen. Learn how to use them. Have monitored fire alarm systems fitted with your monitored burglar alarm system. Also have a fire escape plan and make sure everyone knows it.

You can also have a medical emergency panic button installed that is also monitored in some cases.

At the end of the day, don’t panic or live in fear, just take sensible precautions. You have worked too hard to attain your lifestyle, to just give it away to someone looking for a short cut.

Someone Spying?

Someone Spying? So are the Teddy Bear and the Potted Plant

See the cuddly teddy bear over on the shelf? Well, it sees you too. “Right here in the camera, behind the left eye.” said Marvin Badler, the owner of The Spy Mart a Monmouth County company dedicated to the proposition that what you don’t know can hurt you and what you do know can protect you from being caught off guard.

“There’s a wireless camera transmitter in here.” Mr. Badler said, holding the teddy bear in his arms and pointing to it’s furry little head. ” It can send a signal up to 300 feet away , so you don’t even need a wire to attach it to a VCR.

Mr. Badler a licensed Private investigator since 1961 and former chief investigator for the New York City Department of Correction, was demonstrating some of the item he sells from The Spy Mart’s showroom.
“See that planter over there.” Mr. Badler said, pointing in the direction of an ordinary-looking potted plant. “There’s a camera in the pot. We build it last week. I was shopping with my wife, I saw the planter and came up with the idea.”

Mr. Badler’s business is answer to a challenge: how do you find out what someone is up to without his finding out what are you up to first?
“Most of my customers are law enforcement types.” Mr. Badler said, referring to police, private detectives and prosecutors investigators. Investigators who come to avail themselfs of the latest in clandestine surveillance technology. But we also have a lot of private-sector people and businessman who come in because they want to record their own telephone conversation or because they’re afraid of their business are being bugged.”

Paramilitary Atmosphere

The Spy Mart, which Mr. Badler opened about two years ago, is on the second floor of an office building in Marlboro, New Jersey. Mr. Badler, a tall, burly man with a penchant for 10-gallon hats, also runs his private investigation and security business from the location. The atmosphere is decisively paramilitary, with a secretary and an assistant calling Mr. Badler “sir” in terse formal exchanges.

He instructed the secretary to call him on a telephone atop one of glass display cases that line the walls of the showroom. The phone rang , and Mr. Badler lifted the receiver. “This is a prototype.” he said, telling his assistant to pick up an extension in another room. A red light on the phone blinked on. “See? The phone went dead.” Mr. Badler said holding the receiver our for a visitor to verify that the phone was quite dead.” “What happened was, if I’m talking and somebody gets on the line with a listening device or comes in the room with a transmitter , the light goes on and the phone automatically disconnects the conversation.”
He intends to market the new telephone to other spy shop around the country. The price? About $750.00. Many of the devices in The Spy Mart showroom, including the phone that goes dead, are items Mr. Badler designed himself and then built out of components available at any well - stocked electronics store.

“This is a microphone in a button.” he said, holding out for inspection what appeared to be, well, a button with wire attached to it. “You can put it on a selves of your shirt and attached it to any tape recorder.” he said. “It’s battery powered, and you can change the actual button so it matches the buttons on your shirt.”

He then showed me a pen that, he said, has a tiny microphone inside. Even upon close inspection, nothing about the pen appeared unusual. “The microphone is behind that hole,” he said, indication a hold bout the size of a period at the end of this sentence. “It’s supersensitive, too.”he said, asserting that the tiny microphone is about 10 times more sensitive then the microphones built into microcassettee recorders now on the market.
“See the calculator?” he said, pointing to a credit-card-size calculator.
“That’s a transmitter. But it’s not for public use, only law enforcement. It’s not FCC approved”.

Mr. Badler’s clandestine eavesdropping devices fall into two general t for public use: hard-wired, like the shirt button microphone, which plugs into a microcassettee recorder, and wireless, like the calculator that transmits to an FM receiver some distance away.

Behind the Picture Frame

Some of the wireless transmitters, like the one that replaces an ordinary electric wall socket, can transmit up to a half mile away, drawing power from the house current. Others, which use tiny batteries for power and are about the same size as a sugar cube, transmit for a less distance but are handy for surreptitious placement in vases, behind picture frames and attached under tables and other furniture.

“Again,” Mr. Badler said, “these are for law enforcement, not for public use. It’s illegal to record audio unless you are a party to the conversation.”

But if that’s’ the case, who might use the teddy bear camera with a video camera for a brain? “Anybody,” Mr. Badler replied. It’s not illegal to videotape.”

In fact, he said, the teddy bear was designed for clients who wanted to be able to keep track of how a child’s nanny was treating the child when the parents weren’t home. The teddy bear was set on a high shelf in the chid’s room and connected to a video recorder locked in the parents room. The cost? “Around $1,000.00, not including the ,VCR.” Mr. Badler said. “And there are ways we can make them work in total darkness.” Mr. Badler pointed to what looked like a clock hung on a wall. He instructed his visitor to look at the a video monitor just underneath the clock. On the screen was an image of a confused reporter looking at himself looking at a video monitor. “Now watch this,” Mr. Badler said, switching off the office lights, The image on the video monitor dimmed slightly but remained clear and distinct. “All we do is introduce a small infrared light source - we can hide it anywhere in the room - and it will bounce around and illuminate the room like it was daylight.”

A regular customer of The Spy Mart, a private investigator who declined to give his name, described yet another product that make use on infrared light. “I bought infrared filters for the headlights on my car.” the investigator said, explaining that he used the filters while staking out errant spouses for divorce clients. “I sit in my car with a video camera , aim the headlights at the house or motel and wait. The infrared filters light up the place like it was daytime. I can see them, but they can’t see me.”

The investigator said The Spy Mart was more then a high-the toy store for real-life Sam Spades and amateur spies.

Marvin doesn’t just sell you things and send you out the door,” the man said. “He tells you how to use what you buy. He gives suggestions. You tell him what you want to do and he’ll figure out how to do it.”

And for those new to the business of espionage and counterespionage, Mr. Badler also offers a small library of arcane books with such titles as “How to Disappear Completely and Never be Found.” “Get Even: The Complete Book of Dirty Tricks,” “How the Underdog Gets Justice” and “Methods of Disguise.”

Though The Spy Mart caters to law enforcement officials, Mr. Badler said, a growing segment of his business involves executive and business manages concerned about employee theft and corporate espionage.

“We have a lot of small businesses installing hidden video systems,” he said, adding that it is illegal to install such equipment in areas where people are entitled to expect privacy, like dressing rooms and bathrooms.

Worries About Wiretapping

“We also sell lot of systems to people who think their businesses or home items he showed his offices are being bugged or wiretapped by the competition,” he said. “And we help people who want to record their telephone conversation. A lot of insurance brokers are now recording customer conversation, which is legal.”

Though the market for surveillance devices for law enforcement never seems to dry up, he said, the market among business customers tracks the economy.
“When things are bad out there for business, then business is good for me.” Mr. Badler said. “When the economy is bad, people are stealing more, and there are ad thins going on.”

One of the last items he showed his visitor was is personal favorite. “This is a bug detector,” he said, opening a case that contained a small electronic control panel. He took a small wand with a wire attached to it of the case and pointed the wand at the calculator, which really a hidden transmitter and was supposed to be virtually undetectable. The bug detector flashed and beeped and electronic warning.

“It’s one of my most popular items,”he said.

Why You Need Covert Listening Devices

Covert listening devices are those items that are hidden and meant to listen in on others’ conversations. These devices are often very small and hidden, or they may be disguised to look like ordinary household items. There are a variety of covert listening devices, and they are essential to the success of any surveillance operation or surveillance business.

Convert listening devices can add context where some cameras do not offer adequate information. Sometimes it can be difficult to determine what a visual actually means without the accompanying audio. This makes the incorporation of listening devices very important in any surveillance mission. While the visual may serve to identify, you may miss crucial spoken information without listening devices.

In addition to adding to the visual, covert listening devices have other uses. In some cases it is impossible to get a camera in place. At such times a listening device can be very helpful. These devices ensure that there is some information gleaned and that the surveillance mission is not a complete wash. Audio can provide valuable clues, especially when listening is the only option.

Whether or not you are a surveillance professional, or just a private person, covert listening devices can be very helpful. For the professional, listening devices present a picture of someone who knows what he or she is doing. You look more reputable, and the information is more likely to be helpful, if you use bugs to get information. If you are a private person, there are many uses for covert listening devices. You can use them to record conversations you have with others that may need to be referred to, you can use them listen in on what your children are doing, and you can even use them to check your partner for infidelity.

There are many different covert listening devices, ranging in price from under $50 to costing more than $5,000, depending upon your needs. Additionally, you can get them to look like nearly anything, from buttons and pens to cell phones and alarm clocks. But not matter you buy, or how you use them, it is possible to keep on top of things by making use of covert listening devices.

How to Choose the Right Tires for Your Bicycle Wheels

Most of us take our bicycle wheels for granted. Once we’re rolling, we may think about the handlebars or derailleur and we definitely think about the saddle, but until we get a flat tire, we rarely give a thought to our wheels. Just like someone who works on their feet all day should pay attention to the shoes they wear, bike riders should know at least a little about their wheels.

When we say “bicycle wheels,” we are talking about the whole circular complex of the front and back wheels. No matter what kind of riding you do, road or mountain, racing or recreational, your wheels, linked to your human kinetics power through the crank of the bike pedals, are what move you through a distance in such an eminently satisfying manner. They consist of a tire, probably a tube inside the tire, a rim, spokes, and a hub. The tube is going to claim the most attention: this is what goes flat when you ride over a tack or thorn or simply inflate it wrongly. At very least, every single bike rider out there, anywhere, should know how to change a tube and carry a spare tube and a pump or air cartridge. It will seem like so much extra baggage right up to the moment your tube blows. At that precise moment, your spare tube and air supply turn instantaneously into salvation. Riding any distance at all on a flat tire will destroy your rims, and this is a costly replacement.Carry a tube and know how to change it.

Your tires will age, but not so quickly that you will need to replace them often during the practical lifetime of your bicycle. What you will probably find in regard to this component of your bicycle wheel is that you will choose to have several different tires for your bike, especially if you are riding a hybrid model that crosses the lines between road and mountain models. You will want knobbier tires for off-road adventures and smoother tires for your daily commuting or for that long distance road ride. Basically, the knobbier and fatter your tires, the more stable your ride AND the more work it will take to propel them. Balance your needs by investing in a second set of tires. The kind of frame you have will affect what tires you can fit, but there are varieties for all frames.

As for the rest of what constitutes your bicycle wheels, the spokes and rims and hubs, there is not much you will do once you have your bicycle. Rims and spokes and hubs vary enormously, but once you have purchased your bicycle you won’t do much to these elements other than to keep them clean, free of dirt and grease. Wiping down your bike after a ride is an exceptionally good practice, and while you’re doing it, always run your fingertips lightly over each tire. Early detection of burrs and glass shards can spare you (excuse the pun!) a flat on your next ride.

Cheap Patio Furniture

Looking for a chair or chaise lounge to throw in your truck or the trunk of your car to take to the beach or on a picnic, consider cheap patio furniture so you are not hauling your quality pieces to exotic lands. If something happens to the cheap patio furniture such as being broken during a pick up football game or stolen, you will suffer the inconvenience of losing it, but the expense will not be as great.

Additionally, some of the cheap patio furniture is pretty comfortable and can be used at home around the campfire, for sitting in the sun by the pool or just lounging around the yard reading the newspaper or your favorite book. Many people question the need to spend a great deal of money on furniture they may not use very often and leave sit out in the rain.

Argos garden furniture is an excellent place to try if you are on a budget. They are a large retailer and are generally provide good quality products at very reasonable prices.

Those with large families may have a fairly expensive set of patio furniture that leave on their deck or patio as well as pieces of cheap patio furniture to carry into the yard or to use when others are present for gatherings. During most outings, setting up cheap patio furniture for additional guests to use is not usually noticed, as most are just happy not to have to stand up and hold their paper plate.

The majority of people who buy cheap patio furniture do so for the function of the furniture and not the look. Even those who can easily afford more expensive or luxurious outdoor furniture will choose to buy cheap patio furniture due to its use. Most will provide a degree of comfort for the short time it will be used and provides a place to sit at a cheap price.

As a second set of outdoor furniture, cheap patio furniture is often called into service when visiting others for an outdoor event. You may be asked to bring your own chair and most pieces of cheap patio furniture can be easily folded and placed in your trunk. When the party is over you take them back home for the next time. Using straps, web or solid vinyl or plastic seats and backs the cheaper furniture is usually easier to clean as well.

Being able to keep your cheap patio furniture stored outside is another plus, leaving storage space open for other, more expensive outdoor items. Most of it will last two or more years, making the investment worth the money.
