Why Sand When You Can Scrape?

There are two kinds: the hand scraper, which you hold directly in your hand and the cabinet scraper, which is held in a cast iron body that has a flat sole and two handles. Both scrapers are misnamed because they don’t scrape the wood at all but rather slice very thin shavings.

These scrapers fit a category of hand tools that almost totally disappeared from use in the United States as a result of our love affair with power machinery. Recently, scrapers have begun returning to favor. When I was introduced to the scraper in the mid-1970s, I was taught to use the hand scraper to remove cured runs and sags in wood finish and to cut back and level a finish rapidly in order to create a mirror-flat surface. The hand scraper cuts off ribbons of finish far faster than sandpaper can scratch the finish off. It doesn’t gum up the way sandpaper does and it’s more economical.

A scraper is to sandpaper what a word processor is to a typewriter. I’ve never known a woodworker who learned to use a scraper, or a writer a word processor, who wanted to go back. Scrapers and word processors both increase efficiency many times over. True woodworkers would rather make shavings than sawdust anyway.

To use the hand scraper, hold it between the thumb and forefingers of both hands at an angle of about 50 to 70 degrees above the wood surface or until you feel the burr on the scraper edge catch. Then push it away from you or pull it toward you, cutting a ribbonlike shaving as you go. You can also shift one hand to the reverse position and scrape sideways, perpendicular to your body. If dust is your only product, the scraper is dull.

When you push the scraper, it will tend to bow out slightly in the middle from the pressure of your thumbs. This will create a slightly convex edge and almost imperceptible hollows in the surface you’re scraping. This unevenness could show up under a finish. You should sand out these hollows or scrape them flat using one of the other hand positions, scraping toward you or sideways. But pushing the scraper is the most effective way to remove the most wood. To keep the scraper from heating up, turn it often to another edge. If the scraper gets too hot to hold, set it aside and let it cool for a moment.

The cabinet scraper cuts the same way as the hand scraper. However, the cabinet scraper has a flat sole, which makes it easier to maintain a level surface. It’s particularly useful when you want to even the raised edges of glued-up boards that didn’t come together flat. Begin by scraping off the greater part of the raised edge. Next scrape diagonally across the grain, alternating from a left diagonal to a right diagonal until the top is flat. Then scrape a few passes with the grain. A light sanding and the panel is ready to finish.

How I Raised my Family in Ten Words or Less!

A simple shopping expedition to buy new clothes can become a daunting experience when you’ve lost your income through redundancy.

Suddenly, “luxuries” like family holidays or a new car seem things of the past.

I understand that feeling only too well. It happened to me some years ago. As if that wasn’t enough, my husband was also made redundant at the same time.

Then a newspaper article changed my life…

The article featured ordinary people, like me and you. I read how they enjoyed holidays to exotic locations, drove gleaming new cars and showered their family and friends with exciting goodies - all for free.

Intrigued, I read on. Thinking there must be a catch somewhere!

All these “compers” had one thing in common - they won prizes. Cars. Holidays. Landscaped gardens. Entertainment systems. Computers, toys and games for their kids. Luxury kitchens. Even a house. You name it. They won it.

Normally, I’d read an article and forget it. But with teenage daughter needing new trainers and time on my hands, apart from seemingly endless job hunting, what had I to lose?

A prize crossword in a high street chain store caught my eye. Completed, I sent it on its way and forgot all about it. Three weeks later the postman brought me a long white envelope.

“Congratulations…,” I read, “you’ve won a small gift voucher.”

At that moment I realized there wasn’t a catch. Ordinary people like you and me could, and did, win competition prizes.

It was fun spending the gift voucher, after writing a thank you note to the competition promoter, I wondered if my win was a fluke! I decided to find out…

Wandering round the high street stores I discovered a competition in a free magazine in a bank to win one of 25 pair of trainers and an entry form in a men’s clothing store.

Having never noticed competitions before it was like going on a treasure hunt. Sherlock Holmes would have been proud of me! An entry form collar on a bottle of wine. A prize draw on a bookmark in the local bookshop. Instead of bags of shopping I came back laden with entry forms, all shapes and sizes.

Sitting in the library, wading through an encyclopedia to answer some of the competition questions, I realized what a challenging and fun pastime I’d discovered. And one that was only as expensive as I wanted it to be.

Quickly discovering that prize draws were free to enter, all it cost was a postcard and stamp and not even that when you were allowed to drop your entry form into the free prize in-store posting box.

Those competitions where you were asked to complete a tiebreaker sentence, such as:

“I want to win a car with store because…” usually asked you to attach a qualifying till receipt, I noted.

Avoiding expensive “qualifiers”, it was easy to switch buying habits. For instance, instead of your normal brand of soap powder, you simply bought the brand which was running a competition. You kept your till receipt and enclosed it with your entry as proof of purchase or “qualifier” as it was known.

Thrilled was an understatement, when a store manager phoned to say I’d won first prize in their free to enter contest. A new wardrobe of clothes. My kids were delighted. Hubby and I took them to the store.

I could hardly believe it when, laden with jeans, trousers, T-shirts, fashionable shirts and trainers, the manager accompanied us to a check out. It was like meeting Santa Claus in a suit. He totted up the bill to the amount of our prize win, thanked us for entering their competition and smilingly escorted us to the door before waving us a cheery good-buy!

Although unsuccessful at finding new employment, despite scouring job advertisements and completing application forms, my new pastime of “comping” was keeping my brain active as well as changing our shopping and eating habits.

Instead of window shopping, knowing we couldn’t afford to buy expensive goodies and luxuries, shopping became fun. Often the only thing I’d come back with from an afternoon of shopping, was a pile of entry forms!

The competition tasks were varied, challenging and fun as family general knowledge improved by leaps and bounds. The reference library became a second home.

Our diet changed according to qualifying till receipts.

“Tonight,” I’d tell my family, “we’re having pizza - to try and win an Italian holiday. Served with tomato salad - to win a holiday in the Canaries. Followed by apples - to win a healthy break in France. Oh, and as a treat, you can have a chocolate - to win a Valentine’s cruise!”

“Just remember I need the wrapper!”

Within six months of discovering this new pastime, I won a family holiday in Devon, a TV, video recorder and lots of welcome runners-up prizes like bottles of wine, spirits, leather handbag, a watch, camera and shopping vouchers. Then came a worrying time followed by an exciting ten days.

On Christmas eve my daughter was rushed to hospital with suspected appendicitis. Whilst in the hospital, we watched Del Boy and Rodney from “Only Fools and Horses” in The Everglades and wished we too, could take an airboat ride just like Del and Rodney.

The lady in the next bed passed her magazine to my daughter. Inside was a tiebreaker slogan competition to win a healthy weekend break.

A few weeks later, returning late at night from an interview, I opened an interesting looking letter. Tiredness disappeared as I read:

“Congratulations, you’ve won a health and country club weekend in the Lake District.”

This was followed, a few days later, by a fantastic sur-prize - a family holiday for four to Miami, Florida, including hotel, flights, car hire AND tickets for an air boat ride in The Everglades. Wow!

Still on cloud nine, the next morning I answered the phone to a man who quizzed:

“Do you remember entering a competition in your local supermarket recently?”

“Mmm, yes,” I answered, trying to recall which competition he meant.

“Well”, he continued, “you’ve won a brand new car!”

I was speechless! He said a confirmation letter was in the post. An agonizing “have I dreamed it or not” weekend followed until a long white envelope arrived on Monday. It was true - I’d won a car! And all for identifying eight products and writing a slogan “In 10 words or less”.

And a new job? Well I gave up job hunting! You see, I remembered a childhood ambition to write a book - when I had the time - and now I had the time and the subject - how to Win Your Fortune in Prizes. And the rest, as they say, is history!

Poetry is Written for a Universal Audience

I’ve been writing, reading, and singing poetry for 46-years, and I’ve never heard anything so silly as poetry cannot be enjoyed universally, or it is strictly made for the poet. It is, if given a good translator: translatable, I’d say perhaps 50% of poetry. And most poets do not write for themselves, they wrote for the world, the last of the truth givers. One half the Old Testament is written in a form of poetic prose, if not, epic, ode, elegy, or dramatic. Most of your songs today are poetry in motion, a form of personification, a figure of speech that gives human qualities to inanimate objects or ideas, or can. Homer’s Trojan War is poetic; without it we’d have never known there was a war in 1250 BC in Asia Minor.

I do agree with the fact, perhaps a large hunk of poetry is not translatable from one language to another, but most epic poems are, like the Epic of Gilgamish; it frees the spirit, it is like music. In most of Faulkner’s early writings you will see a pattern, a form of poetry, he had a hell of a time trying to avoid mixing genres of poetic prose fiction into his historical novels and short stories.

In poetry virtually every line of any poem contains all levels of meaning, condensed: poems are short stories, if stretched out. Thus, you do not have to run around town and buy 20-novels to get to the end of the story.

I’ve read poetry from many ages, from the Old English, representing works in oral tradition, the old bard who had to memorize to make sure it got to its right place, with its accented syllables per line. To Anglo-Norman or Middle English poetry, where we get the French lyric forms.

And I can go on to the Renaissance which their poetry gave rebirth to humanistic culture, focused on mankind rather than on God; to the 17th century of Neoclassicism, all the way to what we have now Postmodernism.

In poetry we have what we call verse, meter, both words for poetry itself, meter is the pattern created in a line though. So if anything, you have in poetry the best of that language in a poem.

Like anything else you write, the poet and reader needs to know the audience, who is the audience he is writing for or to. Some folks say they can’t understand Faulkner, to me he is an easy read, I’ve read all his stuff; and Hemingway, is like he is writing to me. But there are some authors I get lost with after a few sentences. The poet doesn’t necessarily write to the whole world at large, no one does, but some can. And like any story, you got to know what the main subject of the poem is (or in a story: the theme, plot and insight), and if the poet can’t give it, he perhaps is not as good as he’d like to be, or you’re not as good as you think you are in reading a condensed story, in poetic form.

You also have to figure out: does the poem belong to a genre, again like reading fiction or nonfiction; these are normal questions we ask ourselves, usually when we read anything. And like many writers, such as William Burroughs, and his friends of the 50s, you have to take into consideration what figure of speech is being used in the poem, just like the story. Nowadays people do not want to take any work in reading, but it requires this to have a good read. And you may want to know what the poet’s life and times were. If I read Fitzgerald now, he is like plain music, but in his day he was a flash of lightening.

Quick Tune-Up For Spring Bicycle Riding

For those of us who put our bikes away for the winter, the time has come to dust them off and get ready to ride. When bringing a bike out of storage, a mini tune-up is necessary. Pay special attention to the following four areas: chain, derailleur components, brakes, and wheels.

~~Chain~~
If you have been using an oil-based lubricant, consider switching to a wax-based product. The only advantage to an oil-based lubricant is that it needs to be applied less frequently, but in every other way, wax-based is superior. For instance, oil collects trail dust and other things abrasive to the chain, whereas wax sheds abrasives. A recommended wax-based lube is White Lightning.

If you’ve been using oil-based chain lube, whether you want to switch to wax or not, you should remove the chain and clean it with a solvent to degrease it before adding fresh lubricant. Depending on your typical riding conditions, using a solvent to degrease the chain needs to be done once a year at a minimum.

~~Derailleur Components~~
Lubricate the pivot points using a good petroleum-based lube. I use Tri-Flow. Next, lubricate and adjust the derailleur cables, which might have stretched over the winter. Adjust so that shifting is crisp.

~~Brakes~~
Again, lubricate the cables. Use either petroleum- or wax-based lube depending on how dusty the expected typical riding conditions will be. Adjust the cables, which might also have stretched over the winter.

Check the pads: is there plenty of rubber; do the pads hit the rims evenly? If using fluid-actuated disc brakes, check the brake fluid level in the reservoir.

~~Wheels~~
Spin the wheel slowly checking for true. The wheel should not wobble at all. If it wobbles a little bit and you have the tools and skill, you can make minor adjustments using a spoke wrench. But if there is substantial wobbling, take the wheel to a shop and have a professional true the wheel.

Check tire pressure, which is bound to be low after a winter of storage. Inflate to the manufacturers recommendations that are stamped on the tire.

Now give the bike a once-over. Is the seat adjustment still a good fit? Is there excess play or tightness in the bearings of the wheels, crank, pedals, and headset? Also, for full-suspension bikes, check the suspension joints.

From this once-over, you will be able to determine whether it is time for a major tune-up. This could range from a few adjustments to cleaning and/or replacement of some parts. Opinions differ on how often a major tune-up is needed. It depends on how much you ride, and how much maintenance you perform yourself.

Whether you do the major tune-up yourself or take the bike to a reputable bicycle shop, every now and then the following maintenance is necessary for optimal performance and safety: repacking bearings and adjusting wheel axles, headset, crankset and pedals; replacing cables; truing the wheels; making overall adjustments, such as to the derailleur and brakes.

How Not to Fail Algebra

An extended research carried out to figure out the reasons behind school dropouts shows that many students look at algebra as the culprit. It is well said, that just the knowledge of the tutor is not alone sufficient to build interest in the subject matter for the pupils. It s the technique; the discipline is explained to its recipient which contributes a lot for developing interest in the subject matters.

What is it?

A concise introduction of Algebra would be a branch of mathematics which substitutes letters for numbers; therefore, algebraic equations can be viewed as a scale. The primary theories of algebra includes real numbers, complex numbers, matrices and vectors.

The Different Spheres

Generally, algebra spreads across many domains of mathematics. Some that are worth mentioning are Multiplying exponents, dividing exponents, Solving radical equations, Finding Greatest common factor or GCM, Multiplying, Adding, Subtracting fractions and many more.

If the above mentioned domains are already making you nervous, I hope that the definitions to follow will ease your anxiety and give real perception in to the content.

Exponents is a notion that shows multiplication of identical factors Fractions are equally interesting and actually are used when representing numbers that describe the parts of a whole. Many such similar areas in algebra may sound fearful at first, but once you understand the simple concept behind it, you will be captivated by its purpose. To state a few more - Mixed numbers , Quadratic formula, Graphing linear inequalities, solving compound in equalities, Factoring binomials, and Factoring polynomials; are all algebraic expressions.

I am sure it will be confounding to comprehend mixed numbers, but it will really interest you to note that they are none other than a type of fractions. Graphing linear inequalities states its purpose pretty clearly by its name. Similarly there are many other algebraic areas which are really interesting to work with.

How to Find a Tutor

If you are interested in understanding the world of algebraic expressions yet do not have a private teacher to assist you in the operation, leave your worries behind since online lessons will come for your rescue. These lessons stress the practicalities rather than theory, showing reliable techniques. The algebra solver packages can guide you stepwise in working out your maths problems and it can also provide explanations of all steps.

My Greatest Stamp Find

I have been involved with stamps nearly my entire life. My first collection was as a ten-year old boy collecting with my neighborhood buddies. By the time I was done with it, I had more than 3,000 stamps in my collection and sold it for the princely sum of 7.50 in 1958. I don’t remember what I did with the money. I think I treated my family to supper at the neighborhood burger joint.

I gave up on the hobby for about seven years and took it up again as an adult. Where before I collected anything I found, I started to look for stamps in better condition and in sets. The first such set I bought was from Vatican City for the 1962 Christmas celebration and paid all of 50c for it.

Though a mere trifle, it was the first knowledgable purchase and only the beginning of a career that would involve the expenditure of many thousands of dollars. Over the years I have bought many individual stamps and collections. The best buy I ever made turned a hundred and fifty dollars expenditure into a sixty-five hundred dollar sale.

My first serious interest in stamps was as a general collector of British Colonies. Especially the stamps of Malta. This interest led to a lifelong interest in the island and the writing of The Cellini Masterpiece under the pen name of Raymond John. Another of my interests was Papua New Guinea. Papua is an enormous island in the south Pacific and the site of many battles during World War II. In 1901 the British issued stamps for the territory of British New Guinea.

These eight stamps showed a native ship known as a Lakatoi and were printed on a variety of papers with a watermark called a rosette which resembles a four-leafed flower. Early printers didn’t pay much attention to how the paper was seeded into the printing presses, so the watermark, which has longer petals on one side, could appear in two positions. They also used thick and thin paper. Most of the stamps were printed on watermark horizontal paper with the short petals pointing up. They ranged from one-half pence to pay the postage for letters sent within the colony to half a crown for heavy parcels sent to Australia, Britain and the rest of the world. One stamp, the 2/6 on thick paper and with the watermark vertical is quite scarce and an expensive stamp.

In 1906 the British separated Papua from the rest of New Guinea and overprinted the remaining stamps in stock with the word “Papua” in large serifed type. Most of the thin paper stamps apparently had been used up, leaving the vertical and horizontal watermarks. The 2/6 with horizontal watermark and vertical thin paper are common and sell for around a hundred dollars each. The watermark vertical, on the other hand, is a major rarity and catalogs for 6,000 British pounds in the Stanley Gibbons catalog. It is the scarcest stamp of Papua and missing from most collections. It is also a popular stamp and when offered it brings tremendous prices.

In 1995 I was still a full-time dealer and made regular buying trips through the midwest and the east. I happened to stop at a stamp auction house in the midwest and went through the lots which were arranged for viewing in small binders. I was pleased to see the Papua overprints and I eagerly inspected the set. It was in pristine, lightly hinged condition and as such, in top collectible condition. I eagerly went to the 2/6 and held it up to the light with my tongs. It was the thick paper.

A good start.

I couldn’t tell if the watermark was vertical or horizontal and I asked to borrow a dipping tray and watermark fluid. The tray is black and when fluid is poured over the stamp, the stamp paper becomes transparent and the watermark will appear.

I could hardly believe my eyes. I had to take another stamp from the set to compare it, but there it was. Watermark vertical!

I looked up to find the woman who was showing the lots giving me an inquisitive look. Would she get a copy of the Gibbons catalog and examine the stamp, too. If so, my discovery would come out and someone else might decide to bid on it.

I carefully replaced the stamps in their mount and handed the book back to her. The sale was nearly three weeks away and I couldn’t wait around until then. I could either go back home and make another trip or contact an agent to bid for me.

I decided on the agent. I gave him a bid of fifteen hundred dollars on the lot to beat out anyone who wanted the stamps but didn’t know about the variety. My biggest concern is that one of the biggest Papua collectors in the world was a local and if he got a look at the stamp, I would never be able to buy it. All I could hope was that he didn’t get a copy of the catalog, or if he did, that he wouldn’t show up to view the lot.

The next twenty days were the longest of my life. The night of the sale I called the agent. He said the starting bid was 75.00. I didn’t sleep that night and called him again early the next morning. I had won the bid at 150 plus 10%. A collector of British Oceania stamps had run up the price on me. The auction house would be shipping my stamps the next day.

The parcel arrived certified mail three days later. I contacted the Papua specialist, but he already had a copy and didn’t want another one. A day later I sent it off to the British Philatelic Association for a certificate. From there it would be included in a Christie’s rarity sale. Four months later it sold for 3,800 pounds or approximaterly 6,500 US.

Now you may ask why the auction house wasn’t aware of the value of the stamp. For one thing, the house catalogued the stamp using the Scotts catalog. Scotts is the standard American catalog and usually only lists a value for the most common variety. The watermark variety is listed in Gibbons, which is British, which includes many other color and watermark varieties than the Scott catalogue. Another reason the stamp may have been overlooked is that auction describers must look at thousands of stamps every day. Even if he (here the gender denoter is correct, I know of only one female describer) has a Gibbons catalog, most will not take the time to look for possible varieties. In short, it is one of the things that makes the hobby so fascinating. Anyone who has found a valuable antique knows the feeling.

Happy hunting!
