Net Telephone Services In Trouble - 911 FCC Rules Upheld

Net telephone service providers are facing a huge problem. A court has upheld FCC regulations requiring the voice over internet protocol providers to provide 911 services.

911 Rules

As you know, traditional telephone companies provide 911 call services to customers. Under long established laws, the traditional telephone companies are required to automatically route such calls to a geographically appropriate area and deliver the originating phone number and address of the call. Net telephone services haven’t done this in the past as the technical reading of the regulations didn’t require them to. Now the regulations do and it is causing problems.

VOIP net telephone services are having severe difficulty complying with the FCC regulations. The calls are not routed through a traditional telephone line structure, which makes it very hard to determine the original calling number and address. On top of this, it is extraordinarily difficult to route the calls to the appropriate geographic emergency phone call center. Throw in politics and you have a boondoggle in the making.

911 In A Digital Age

In many cases, government agencies fail to appreciate the complexities of the Internet and digital technology. They have a habit of issuing rules and regulations that are either antiquated or impossible to implement. The FCC and FTC are famous for doing so, particularly since the agencies seem to have the technical sophistication of dinosaur. On the issue of 911 rules for net telephone services, however, the FCC has acted appropriately.

911 is a critical service that must be made available to the public. It performs a service that is both needed and necessary. As the net telephone services seek bigger shares of the commercial market, they must also assume larger responsibility for the services they provide. This is particularly true for 911 services.

911 emergency call centers help save lives. In health risk situations, time is almost always a critical component in the outcome. Given as much, the FCC has acted appropriately in requiring net telephone services to provide 911 services to customers.

What’s Your IQ on Basic PC Phone (VoIP) Knowledge

Short T/F quiz

1. T / F You can save a significant amount of money using VoIP rather than traditional telephone/cell phone calling methods.

2. T / F The minimum requirement for VoIP is a broadband (high speed) connection.

3. T / F VoIP security is not an issue to be concerned about because most computers are protected with firewalls.

4. T / F Over 75% of the world will be using VoIP for communication within the next 3-4 years.

5. T / F You can make all your phone calls anywhere in the world from your computer.

6. T / F Peer-to-peer (P2P) networks are perfectly safe to use, especially if your computer is protected with firewalls.

Answers

1. The answer is True. In fact, it is the tremendous savings of up to 80% off traditional phone calling that makes VoIP attractive to consumers and businesses. The only equipment needed for VoIP is your PC and a microphone (if one is not built into your PC). Beware of VoIP service providers that require you to purchase additional equipment and/or sign contracts.

2. The answer is False. Although the public has been fed a steady diet that the minimum requirement for VoIP is a high speed (broadband) connection, this is absolutely false.

Over 90% of the VoIP providers have used this false premise as a smokescreen to take your focus off the fact that their priority was and is to line their own pockets rather than expend the time, effort, and funds to develop technology that incorporates dial up capability.

The technology required for dial up connections to use VoIP involves the ability to compress data packets down to a minimum size of 8 kbps prior to traveling over the Internet.

3. The answer is False. Security should be the most important feature of any VoIP solution provider. Firewalls do not incorporate protection for VoIP. VoIP security should incorporate protection against identity theft, Trojan horses, viruses, and worms.

Craig Pollard of Siemens advised that “Voice must be protected like any other application”. He further stated that, “Along with IT directors and telecom managers, a number of financial directors came to our road shows, which may not be surprising considering the damaging potential of VoIP threats if a network is not properly protected.”

Over 90% of VoIP solution providers do not operate on secure lines. These providers, in order to save a few dollars at your expense, operate on industry standard codec (encryption codes) and industry standard protocols which are publicly open and interpretable. Hacker friendly providers offer hacker manuals, software, programs, and even processor chips that makes accessibility to your computer from these industry standards - as enticing as chum is to sharks in a feeding frenzy.

When a computer hacker gains unauthorized access to your computer, their sole purpose is to steal your identity and sell your personal and confidential information to other criminal entities. In addition, they often plant Trojan horses, viruses, and worms into your computer.

4. The answer is True. Industry insiders such AT&T says, “VoIP traffic is projected to account for approximately 75% of the world’s voice traffic by 2007″. This suggests a major paradigm shift in communication.

5. The answer is True. Not only can you make all your phone calls anywhere in the world from your computer, you can also travel with your computer phone. Simply by bringing your unique number and password, you can download your phone with your entire contact list. Of course, PC to PC is usually free between subscribers. PC to telephones and cell phones typically involves fees at drastically reduced rates when compared to traditional calling rates.

6. The answer is False. P2P networks use industry standard codec (encryption codes) and industry standard protocols which are publicly open and interpretable.

John Ashcroft, Attorney General, in remarks at the High Technology Crime Investigation Association 2004 International Training Conference held on September 13, 2004 stated, “We have seen worms and viruses attack…disrupting basic services…And with the increased use of the Internet and especially peer-to-peer networking, we have seen malicious code spread more quickly and infect more personal computers than ever before. The cost of these worms, viruses, and denial-of-service attacks…reaches into the billions of dollars.”

P2P networks such as Skype operate by taking bandwidth (information carrying capacity) from customers on their service to assist other customers using their service - analogous to a symbiotic relationship. The tools that enable them to accomplish this are bundled in the software their customers agree to in order to download and access their VoIP service.

Another grave concern for both individuals and businesses when using P2P systems is unknowingly having your computer used as a supernode. A supernode occurs when your computer is arbitrarily assigned as a hub.

When you are running the software for P2P services, your computer’s disk space, bandwidth, and processing power are used to help other users on the same system operate their software more efficiently because of their own network or firewall constraints.

We as consumers still have a lot to learn about VoIP, as this technology is the new era of communication and is continuously being changed.

All VoIP service providers need to incorporate the protection, needs, and desires of its customers, as well as address security and dial up capability.

All VoIP service providers should invest in developing a proprietary patented technology that incorporates compression of data packets so that their VoIP can be used on dial up connections, as well as cable, satellite, and wireless.

All VoIP service providers should develop and create their own proprietary high end encryption codec with patented technology, simply because they do not want their customers to be victims of viruses, worms, Trojan horses, or have their identity stolen as a result of using their VoIP service.

Simply put, all VoIP service providers should place the protection, security, and needs of their customers FIRST. Of course, they are in business to earn profits, but it should not be at the expense of exposing their customers to unscrupulous entities.

Strong Passwords Necessary to Protect Online Information from Hackers

A strong password for your online account can keep you safe from hackers, as a recent research from Microsoft shows. To secure an online account, one should create a password that is hard to guess and unpredictable.

Microsoft recently set up a bait FTP server to lure hackers to the information stored therein. The activities of the hackers were recorded and studied later to determine their method of operation. It was revealed by the findings that hackers typically use common words or number combinations first to break user codes. Passwords like ‘#!comment’, ‘password’, ‘123456′ and ‘changeme’ are highly prone to hacking, as these are the ones first tried by hackers.

In order to secure an account, its code must be a combination of many unpredictable letters, characters or numbers. Special characters in a password can enhance its strength. Users can check out password generating websites to get a suitable and secure password. Alternatively, they can check their existing passwords with Microsoft’s password checker and see if they are secure enough.

As hackers use human nature as a guide to identifying passwords, users are advised to behave in an unpredictable manner while setting these critical security features.

More and more people nowadays log on to private internet accounts to carry out various sensitive activities, particularly financial transactions. Beginning with bank accounts to credit card details, all classified information is revealed online during these activities. It is high time that awareness is raised about the risks of maintaining easy to guess passwords in order to strengthen the security of online data.

If you are approaching the end of your contract and considering changing broadband provider, or if you are concerned about internet safety or just the safety of your download limits, searching for broadband deals and making the right choice can be a difficult process. uSwitch Report Unscientific, Claims TalkTalk

British ISP TalkTalk has expressed its strong dissatisfaction with the findings of a recent survey on technical support performance conducted by uSwitch.

The survey shows that more than half the customers of broadband services are dissatisfied with their provider’s technical support. More than a million pounds are spent by customers per annum on calling tech support, averaging a cost of nearly £1.75 per call. Only about 40% of the calls result in actual resolution of the problem, the report shows.

The report also places TalkTalk dismally low on the list of technical support performance. O2 customers spend about 2 minutes on hold while TalkTalk customers spend an average of 12 minutes on hold until they can actually reach support personnel, claims the report. Finally, Orange Broadband and Tiscali Broadband are found to be providers with the most dissatisfied customers.

TalkTalk, while reiterating its commitment to consistently enhancing its customer service and tech support levels, has rejected the survey findings outright, calling them inaccurate and irrelevant. It has refuted the findings by presenting figures of its own, and showed that its customers spend an average of only 53 seconds on hold in a call. This figure was gathered by the ISP from data collected during actual calls made to its support centres.

TalkTalk claims that the uSwitch statistics are skewed because they were derived from outdated statistics. Further, the statistics collected pertained to the amount of time people spent on hold and hence they did not really reflect the correct picture.

O2 Technical Support Service Launched

O2 has launched a technical support service for its broadband customers. Many users still find themselves clueless when dealing with mice, broadband, modems etc., which is why this service seems like a good venture as it will definitely find a lot of takers.

Jonathan Earle, head of Pay Monthly at O2, elaborating on the purpose of the launch said that there were customers who wanted a place that could fulfil all their requirement from buying new products to providing support for fixing glitches in their computers. O2 technical support is meant to achieve this very objective.

O2 Tech Support will provide help for all the technical problems that might occur ranging from hard drive formatting to protecting against viruses and from sending e-mails to setting up software. But the services provided are not going to be free. If technical support is not what you’re after, but just more info on mobile broadband, then best refer to a dedicated mobile broadband website, which can be a one stop for free advice, info, news and of course laptop deals.

A minimum 3 month of subscription could cost anything upwards of £7.34 per month. Another way of paying is on a pay-per-use terms whereby customers will pay every time they use the O2 Tech Support service. The price starts from £14.69. But with pay-per-use, customers are not charged unless their problems are fixed as promised by the organization under the motto ‘No Fix-No Fee’.

As good an idea as O2 Tech Support is, it is prone to manipulation. Customers can only hope that they are not ripped off by their service provider, which can direct their calls meant for standard customer service problems, to O2 Tech Support thereby making them liable for payment.

Ofcom Credit Bill Monitor Comparison Site

A new Web-based service has been launched, to allow consumers to compare mobile phone companies tariffs; this is the first time the website like this has been accredited by Ofcom, the communications regulator. Users of this service will do well to think about how to recycle mobile phones too.

A rigorous independent audit was carried out by Ofcom before Bill Monitor was awarded its price accreditation scheme logo. The checks which were carried out by Ofcom column ensure that the information provided by Bill Monitor is accessible, accurate, transparent, comprehensive and up-to-date when given to customers.

Advanced statistics were used to evaluate the best known of price plans that were accessible to consumers across the five UK mobile operators; three, 02, orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone. Bill monitor’s team of mathematicians developed the comparison a new in conjunction with scientific advisers from Oxford University. The comparison engine shows consumers exactly how much they can say if they switch their phone plan or supplier.

All consumers have to do, is provided details of their current bills and the website then analyses them and provides any tailored recommendation.

There is opportunity for users to do a one-off tariff search by entering the various details about the amount of minutes and text are they used on a monthly basis. The system will then find round the most suitable tariff from the five UK phone networks.

Bill monitor will also analyse historical usage patterns of consumers mobile phone habits to predict the future usage, and it can also update the consumers on any money that they could save as and when the networks change the pricing plans.

Ofcom believe that over 57% of mobile users would be likely to use information such as that provided by Bill monitor if you’re available to through the cheapest member from supplier. They also found that 50% of consumers are much more likely to trust a price comparison website that has been accredited.

Bournemouth First Town to Get Fibrecity FTTH

About 50 residents of Bournemouth are now enjoying 100Mb fibre optic broadband under the Fibrecity FTTH network. Fibrecity is an initiative by i3 Group, earlier known as H20 Networks.

The manner in which the network reaches users is quite innovative. Instead of digging up roads for laying cables, the company has used existing sewer lines as conduits. The project is the beginning of the fifteen-town coverage for Fibrecity, with Dundee being the next city on the list.

The i3 Group has already made plans for other areas in the UK. According to estimates, Fibrecity will connect approximately 2,000 new homes per week once the project is in full force.

During the period that the network is new and being tested by engineers, Fibrecity customers in Bournemouth are actually enjoying free installation and service. They will have to start paying for the same the moment the project is completed and moves out of Bournemouth. The next town to be connected, Dundee, will also have the same offer available once work on the Fibrecity network begins there. The estimated time of completion of Dundee’s Fibrecity network is around the end of 2010. For more info on what broadband is available to you, click here.

CEO of the i3 Group, Elfed Thomas talked about the merits of Fibrecity in comparison to BT’s attempts at fibre optic broadband. He said that Fibrecity is the only network that will supply all homes with fibre right up to the living room. In contrast, BT is still using older and slower copper networks, something that Fibrecity avoids at all costs.
